A check with pictures and lights instead of letters, time for them to relax and a clear report for school or the paediatrician. No drops unless needed. And if glasses are needed, frames that survive the playground.

What we look at
- Visual acuity with picturesNo reading needed. With the tumbling E or with shapes, depending on age.
- Alignment and binocular visionLazy eye (amblyopia) and squint. The earlier it's found, the better it corrects.
- Refraction with lightRetinoscope and autorefractor; no drops in most cases.
- How they use their eyesIn class, on the tablet, when reading. Sometimes the answer isn't glasses.
When to bring them
At 4, at 6 and before each school year if they already wear glasses. Sooner if the school flags it, if they get very close to things, tilt their head, rub their eyes or get headaches in the afternoon.
If glasses are needed
Flexible TR90 or acetate frames, with hinges that survive being sat on. Hardened organic lenses, always. And myopia control when a child starts to become short-sighted: lenses or contacts that slow progression, with checks every six months.

Questions we get asked
What if they won't cooperate?
It happens. We stop, play a while and try again. If it doesn't work, we repeat another day at no charge.
Do they need drops?
Almost never. If we suspect hidden long-sightedness, we refer to the ophthalmologist for the check with drops.
What is myopia control?
Lenses or contacts designed to slow the increase of myopia in children. They work best the earlier you start.
